Why I'd Rather Pay Extra for Rexnord Couplings Than Gamble With Cheaper Alternatives

I’ve learned the hard way: “fast and cheap” is a myth

Everything I'd read about industrial procurement said you should always compare final landed cost, negotiate aggressively, and never pay list price. And for the first few years, I did exactly that. But back in April 2023, when a critical conveyor line went down on a Friday afternoon and I needed a replacement coupling by Tuesday morning—that experience flipped my thinking.

I’m an office administrator for a 200-person mining equipment services company. I manage about 80 purchase orders a year across 12 vendors, roughly $1.2M in annual spend. But if the substitute fails — which it did for me — the $14,000 in lost production dwarfs the savings. Even a 10% failure risk is a $1,400 expected cost, making the Rexnord part the cheaper choice in probability-weighted terms. (I learned that from our finance team after the incident.)

Objection: “But our budget can’t absorb premium pricing every time”

I hear this from my own operations manager. And she’s right — we don’t always need the fastest, most expensive option.
